What Is Answer Engine Optimization?

AEO explained in practical terms: what it is, how it differs from SEO, and where teams should start.

AEO is about being selected inside the answer

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of improving how AI systems discover, understand, and cite your content inside generated answers. Where SEO fights for ranking positions, AEO fights for inclusion and influence inside the response itself.

That difference matters because many users never visit a traditional search result page before deciding which tool, source, or brand looks credible. If your site is not part of the answer set, you lose before the click.

SEO still matters, but it is no longer enough

AEO does not replace SEO. It sits on top of it. Crawlability, structured content, internal linking, and authority still matter. The difference is that AI systems reward pages that are easier to parse, summarize, and ground in a direct response.

Teams that only think in rankings often miss the citation layer. A page can rank well and still fail to appear in AI answers because the structure is weak, the proof is thin, or the answer is buried.

Three layers of AEO work

The first layer is technical readiness: robots, rendering, schema, canonical consistency, and content accessibility. The second is answer structure: BLUF writing, clear headings, strong definitions, and sourceable claims. The third is authority distribution: comparisons, research, mentions, and third-party citations.

Most teams improve only one layer. The faster route is to sequence them: fix technical blockers, tighten answer structure, then build the content and PR surface that makes citation more likely.

How to start without boiling the ocean

Pick one workflow. Run a quick scan for the brand. If the signal is weak, audit the most important landing page. If competitors are already winning the conversation, use citation-gap analysis to decide what you need to publish or improve next.

That gives stakeholders a concrete path instead of a vague mandate to optimize for AI search.
