The first measurement is brutally simple: does the model mention the brand at all? Many teams jump to advanced scoring before establishing this baseline. If presence is missing, no amount of dashboard complexity helps.
A quick scan exists for exactly this reason. It answers the threshold question quickly and keeps the next decision obvious.
Then look at quality of mention
Not all mentions are equal. A weak mention buried at the end of a long answer is different from a confident recommendation in the first lines. Score models should reflect prominence, confidence, and context, not only binary inclusion.
That is why per-provider scoring remains useful even when it is imperfect. It forces teams to distinguish between appearance and influence.
Track the source layer
AI visibility is also a sourcing problem. Which domains are being cited? Which publishers keep showing up? Which competitor pages seem to anchor the answer set? If you ignore the source layer, you miss the mechanism behind the answer.
Citation gap analysis turns that mechanism into a list of opportunities rather than a mystery.
Tie measurement to action
The right metric is the one that tells a team what to do next. Presence data tells you whether to keep scanning or start fixing. Audit data tells you which page needs work. Citation gaps tell you what to publish or promote.
